Electrical cable and component company Firstflex has expanded its testing capabilities with the completion of a specialised, temperature-controlled cable testing laboratory at its Auckland headquarters.

This investment strengthens cable quality assurance and technical capability in New Zealand. The facility has been designed to deliver highly accurate cable performance evaluation, including the examination of cable construction, conductor integrity, insulation and sheath materials.

Head of product growth Nigel Greig said the new laboratory will enable expert testing and analysis to support customers across infrastructure, industrial, telecommunications and engineering sectors.

“The establishment of this laboratory is an important strategic step for Firstflex and the wider New Zealand market.

4 February 2025

Firstflex Cables is taking significant steps in the company’s ongoing efforts to reduce its environmental impact, with the implementation of two new initiatives to reduce waste.

Firstflex has sourced and introduced two new timber drum sizes for its cable orders, which will significantly reduce its plastic reel usage.

“Our new 450mm and 550mm diameter/flange drums will replace an estimated 25 tonnes of plastic waste per year,” says Daniel McLean, Operations and Procurement Manager at Firstflex.

“Additionally we’ve revised our plastic reel packaging so that the recycling symbol is embossed and more prominently displayed. Our remaining plastic reels are either ‘PP/5’ recyclable which is recyclable by most councils in New Zealand or ‘Other/7’ recyclable, where acceptability varies depending on your local council.”
